The Job Interview from Hell! Nigeria Immigration Service Recruitment Exercise

The death toll is still unfolding from the mass recruitment exercise organised by the Nigeria Immigration Service. Disturbing news through-out the day on the horrible experience that unemployed Nigerians suffered. I just spoke to one of the Abuja candidates and you can listen to his harrowing account below:

The Federal Government should not allow poor Nigerians to suffer this fate. There are many questions for Nigeria Immigration Service to answer, and the people responsible should be held to account.

  1. Amazing...there must be accountability for this.

  2. So sad. You can imagine the pain and suffering people go through just to secure a job in this country. The NIS has a lot of questions to answer on this. They did not even shortlist they just said everyone that applied should come for the test. What laziness!!!!

  3. Very pathetic. One can imagine the calamity that befell some family. When recruiting people, crowd control measures must be incorporated considering the desperation of teeming unemployed youth in our Country.

  4. Quite frankly, the incident is unfortunate, appalling and despicable to say the least. I do not see any reason why those who authorised and organised this recruitment exercise should not be made to face charges on human rights abuse, manslaughter, corruption and abuse of administrative processes. First, why charge jobless citizens N1,000 each to sit the exams? Second, why invite people for exams without adequate logistics and welfare? Third, why such administrative blunder? Why show such disrespect to Nigerians, inviting such large crowds for an exercise which the NIS clearly has no capacity to manage? From the eye witness account, everyone was basically writing the same paper at supposedly at the same time, based on whether or not you were able to grab a question paper. What an inhumane treatment! The welfare, safety and security of citizens is the government's responsibility. No institution of the government of Nigeria should subject citizens to such dreadful and vile treatments. I hope that the relevant authorities - the executive, the legislature and the judiciary will bring the perpetrators of this shameful, inhumane and highly irresponsible acts to book. Heads need to roll and compensations need to be paid to all victims - dead and alive! NIS should start by refunding the N1,000 exam fee. This senseless drive for income generation by these government organisations who have no business doing so needs to stop. The arbitrariness and shallowness of considerations and standards are overwhelming and repulsive. People need to be held to account for their actions, particularly in public offices.
